ESET Family Security Pack - 5 User

Would not install on Windows 7 PC, but worked with 8 - UPDATE 12/1/14
I purchased ESET Family Security Pack - 5 User because the price was right and the reviews were good. I've used Trend Micro, BitDefender, Norton, McAfee, Webroot, Avast, Avira, Panda and AVG (both free and paid versions), as well as a few I'm probably forgetting to mention, on Windows PCs with operating systems from XP to 8. I've undoubtedly installed antivirus and security suites over 50 times on about as many Windows based PC's and cannot remember any installation issues that could not be quickly overcome, until ESET.The good part about ESET is that it protects from the cloud. No bogging down your system, which is always a plus. This package also offers protection for up to 5 PCs for 1 year. Another perk! You can use it on Windows PCs or Mac computers, providing a host of security including: antivirus and antispyware protection, a firewall, parental controls and a free anti-theft component with the product's update. A gamer mode (suspending pop-ups), antispam for email, and internet security training tips, are all great, but you have to get ESET to install to use these benefits, and that isn't always easy.I installed ESET on 2 laptops running Windows 8 64-bit, without incident. I then tried to install it on a laptop that had originally had Vista on it, and has been upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium. After 5 tries to install it, I gave up.The error I received was addressed on the ESET site and I went through the steps to attempt to resolve the issue, without success. I am an advanced Windows user, and despite my best efforts, I could not get this software to install on that laptop. I had been using Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Complete 2013 - 5 Devices  on it, and ended up returning to that product; which is also 'on the cloud' and easy on system resources. On the PCs which are running this product, things appear to be good. It's so lightweight that it really makes a nice difference on the Windows 8 PCs which seemed to bog down with the factory installed Symantec Norton 360 2013 - for up to 3 Users for Windows (Catalog Category: Tools & Utilities / Computer Security) .With so many of these products out there, you have choices. I have had wonderful luck using Trend Micro Titanium Premium Security Software , Webroot and Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 - 3 Users [Old Version ] on my Windows 7 PCs and will return to using them instead of ESET.If you have a Windows 8 PC, ESET should install from the web interface just fine, and run in the background. You need to register only once, and then if setting it up on a second machine, skip the 1st step online and just go to the second to begin the process of installation.UPDATE: 2/1/14A Amazon user left a comment on this review: "I have run ESET on Windows 7 machines since windows 7 was in beta, all without any issues. It works great. Sounds like you issues is with the archaic windows upgrade path from vista to 7. As a former windows developer I can almost guarantee it is a windows issue."I would agree that the Vista upgrade in Windows has probably something to do with installation issues with this product on a PC that had been upgraded from Vista to Windows 7.However, even on my Windows 8 PC; where the product did install, I'm not a fan of this product. I used it for several months and eventually removed it in favor of another product. I am currently using Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Plus 3 Device 2013 [Download ], and like it much better.

Good Product
I like the product but it took me forever to figure out which version to get. I think I have the one I wanted that will give me virus protection, just didn't need the rest of the stuff. Have used this product for years but speaking plain english to the nontekkies is not their strong point. This one was quite a bit more difficult to install, at least for me. It took about five tries, following their exact directions, before it would install. All this is what I dropped a star. As far as security, for banking it takes you to another site that (I think) makes it more secure. Unfortunately it doesn't recognize all banking institutions, no pattern, just some work and some don't. Plus it takes me to the more secure site for viewing Kroger.com (and some other similar sites). Go figure.

Good software but terrible customer support
I have been using the ESET Family Security pack for just over 2 years now. The software is fairly easy-to-use with simple automatic updates. The only downside to the software is that it often gives looping popup messages about some other program trying to connect to a remote server. It seems like ESET doesn't always 'remember' my choices. However, after the settings have been adjusted appropriately, it happens much less frequently. The customer support however, is unbelievably frustrating. I ran into some username/password issues (my account has been renewed but the updates were not working), and actually getting someone to respond has been a nightmare. I sent messages to customer support through the website, no one responded. I tried the online chat, and no one could help; I was instead referred to a phone number. I called the phone number and was on hold for 20 minutes. I finally talked to someone who was warm and friendly, but also was unable to help. I wasted a day with ESET and finally had success getting a simple issue resolved. The software is good, but I'll be searching for comparable software with customer support that works.

Maybe too good
Good security package. Some of the features get in the way, especially when you click on a link that directs you to a new site. You have to "allow" the transfer, with no way to mark the link as trusted. If you had a "always allow" option, it would make the program much more friendly. I have had several warnings about problems with incoming e mail, and a few sites have tripped warnings. I'm satisfied that the level of protection is superior, and that's what I'm paying for.

Not an easy installation
JUST TRIED TO INSTALL ON MY NEW MACBOOK AIR (using disk and Apple USB Superdrive) AND AFTER FOLLOWING ALL INSTRUCTIONS, KEPT GETTING AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAID THAT ACTIVATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED, BUT NEVER TOLD ME WHY. HAD TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT DAY DURING SUPPORT HOURS, AND SOMEONE FROM ESET WALKED ME THROUGH THE INSTALLATION AND HAD TO DO THE ACTIVATION FROM THERE. THEY WERE NOT SURE WHY MINE DIDN'T WORK, BUT WERE ABLE TO FIX. NOTE THAT THIS LICENSE IS GOOD FOR ONE YEAR ONLY.

Disappointed
This thing is not working, I am unable to get in touch with their company for help. It does have a lovely photo of Robot Man when I turn on my computer, hence two stars

Best security product I've ever used
This is our second year with ESET. It really works and is not a resource hog.I'm no newbie, having worked with computers since 1965. GE Mark II time-sharing via ASR Teletype about the time that a young WA prep school student, Billy Gates, also was on the same system. Always wondered whatever became of him.Recent years, we gave up on McAfee and Norton and the others and tried the free security sites. Several were ineffective. One allowed a hack to intrude and I had to buy and install Malwarebytes just to get my computer back. AVG is horrible and hijacked the Google Chrome browser on one of my machines. Avista eats up machine cycles and fills your screen with pop-up ads inviting you to pay actual money.A friend recommended ESET. Unless something better comes along, I am with ESET.

Doesn't slow down your system
Purchased this as we run both Mac and Microsoft products at home. Works well for both systems and very easy to set up. Runs in the background and no annoying popup windows like some other products I have used in the past.
