Chemistry by OpenStax (hardcover version, full color)

This is the book that can be used for Gen. Chem. 1 and 2 in the California public university system. Be aware that a PDF version of this exact text is available for free online (it is open source.) I bought the textbook because I wanted a physical book to study from. I bought it from one of the third-party sellers on Amazon in used condition and it arrived looking almost new. I paid a little over $8. As of the time of my writing this review, it doesn't appear there are any used ones available but if you do decide to pull the trigger double-check. The book came as advertised in a reasonable time frame. Good buy. 5 stars.

What I needed

There are a handful of errors I've come across in printing, such as mislabeled images or paragraphs that repeat themselves, but overall it has far fewer errors than pretty much any other textbook I've had to use for any class. Also, the errors in this textbook appear to be legitimate, not purposeful--other textbooks seem to insert deliberate errors to justify printing a new edition every year. This one does not seem to do that. The explanations are clear and well written, the topics covered pretty thoroughly. It also helps that the online version is free, so if I don't want to carry it with me to school I don't have to. (This sucker is HUGE and HEAVY.) Honestly, I'm really happy about this purchase and it's one I'll be holding on to forever because it's genuinely useful and informative.

Great book, it takes a thorough comprehensive step by step look at the great world of chemistry. It leaves no stone unturned. This book is a must if you are taking chemistry classes or if you’re just interested in this subject.

This book is a good textbook for the General Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry courses I teach. I love that the pdf is freely available on OpenStax and even the hardcover print version is very cheap, particularly for a chemistry textbook. I have received positive feedback from my students so far.

For the price, this is a solid textbook for first-year general chemistry. It also has a great website with a lot of extra learning guides. You can also get this textbook for free as a .pdf at the OpenStax website. So thankful for OERs!
