Yes you can. The Ethernet SmoothStepper actually transfers all of the complicated processing to the device, rather than your computer. That frees up your computer to be used simultaneously while running the machine. That being said, we would still recommend you have a computer dedicated to running the machine.

Is this a 'stand-alone' module that does not require a separate BOB (breakout board)?

You will need a breakout board and/or a IDC26 to DB25 parallel cable adapter. This will all depend greatly on your setup.

Is this a good choice to upgrade and fix known issues with the control system on my Chinese tabletop 6040? If so, what else do you think would be good

I don't know what issues you are having but the ethernet smooth stepper works fine on my converted Bridgeport Chinese clone.

I'm confused on where to start. Is this the right choice for plasma table? I wanted Mach 4 but sounds like 3 works best with this board??

This board will work with Mach3 or Mach4. If you already have Mach3 then no problem, use it. If you are starting new then it would probably be better to go with Mach4. There are several Break Out Boards (BOB) that will work with the SmoothStepper and what one you want to use depends on how the hardware of the machine you want to connect to is configured.
