Understanding Sentence Structure: An Introduction to English Syntax (Linguistics in the World)

I am a third year linguistics student from a Spanish speaking background. The chance to go back and review this body of knowledge has been great. Really good model sentences to illustrate the point and work on, in order to fix the concept. Weaving the theory of constituency in to the discussion points is excellent. Great textbook layout and attractive use of a colour sequence. The language used to explain the more abstruse elements is just right on the nail , but then perhaps I have now moved far enough to understand the intent. Recommend this authors work for clarity and sound grasp of a students development path. Her publishers have designed a good text layout.

英語の文の構造を生成文法的な観点から易しく分析した書である。Jacobs, R. A. & P. Rosenbaum. 1968. English Transformational Grammar や Langendoen, D. Terence. 1969. The Study of Syntax: The GenerativeTransformational Approach to the Structure of American Englishなどを読だ人なら本書の句構造規則や枝分かれ図は容易に理解できるだろう。というより少し退屈してしまうかもしれない。文分析そのものに関して特に新説が展開されているわけでないからである。本書を面白くしているのは「構造は究極的には個人の脳から生み出されたものである」「語の形態はそれぞれ異なった形で個人の脳内レキシコンに貯蔵されている」という著者の立場である。たたえば、doneを do の過去・過去分詞として脳内レキシコンに貯蔵している人は(1)They done it again.(2)They’ve done that five times this morning already!などと言う。著者は(1)に非文マーク★をつけていない。著者が非文マーク★をつけているのは、たとえば、Mary thinks the pizza.のような文法的にも意味的にも起こりえない場合のみである。生成文法を踏襲しているようであるが、1970年代の生成文法に浴びせられた批判を十分考慮して、地域・人種・性・社会階級・個人の言語バリエーションを尊重する立場から書かれた生成文法書である。一読をお薦めする。
