Good images AND info
Good variety of images and nice overview of the trends of fashion and their influences. A helpful tool for identifying hats. Fairly good for costume design inspiration--perhaps better for men's styles. I deducted one star as it's less comprehensive for women, especially after 1850.

She flips her lid over lids
This was the first of Wilcox's trilogy of specialized "mode" titles (the others, The Mode in Footwear: A Historical Survey with 53 Plates (Dover Fashion and Costumes) and The Mode in Furs: A Historical Survey with 680 Illustrations (Dover Fashion and Costumes) , have also been reprinted by Dover in a uniform edition), and its 24 chapters brim (no pun intended) with headgear and hairdos from Ancient Egypt to 1959. Crowns and wigs, turbans and veils, helmets, hairpins, ecclesiastical items, Near Eastern turbans and tarbooshes, caps and circlets, hoods and liripipes, escoffions and hennins, berets and bonnets, hats of every shape and brim width, and a wide variety of coiffures are covered, from the simple to the absurdly ornate (like the 1780's Gainsborough shown on the front cover), for men, women, and children. Wilcox's lovely line drawings amplify her text to perfection. No costume maven can afford not to own this set.

A costumers bible
I used this book extensivley when I was costuming. It is clear, concise and brilliantly illustrated. I cannot say enough good about this book whether you are a designer of any ilk or simply interested in a history of fashion you must own this. I am ecstatic that I can finally buy my own copy!

The Greatest Book on Hats
Out of print since 1945, this book is a prize. Not easy to find, this "classic hat book" traces the history of hats and headdress in the Western world starting with "Ancient Egypt" and ending with "United States, 1940-1944." Between are 330 pages, 193 of which are full page illustrations of hats worn by men and women throughout history. A great resource for theater people, names and descriptions are included with the hats pictured on heads.

Hats off to Wilcox!
I bought this book because I read a great deal of historical fiction and the terms used for articles of clothing are mysterious to me. This makes it easier to identify what is being described. The only criticism I have is the text next to the illustrations is a handwritten type font that is distracting and difficult to read. I am glad I bought it, however.

Ottimo acquisto!

Perfect
If you're looking for a historical book (from Ancient Egypt until 1959) about hairstyles, hats and wigs, this is it. Every era has an introduction (couple of pages explaining what happened related to hairstyles etc during that period) and many drawings with little descriptions. 348 pages filled with knowledge. My only wish would be that it didn't stop at 1959, because it's a magnificent book.So worth the price, I highly recommend it. Shipping and everything else was also great.

Excellent reference for artists
This is an excellent reference for artists who are looking for an extensive collection of headwear designs from many different countries and time periods. The drawings are excellently rendered and organized in a fashion that is easy to use. For someone just wanting to look at the illustrations it has a wealth of visual content as well as supplementary reading that gives more background information on the function and movements of the fashion trends. My only criticism with this book as well as Wilcox's other similar surveys as well as most other historical illustration books would have to be that there is very little exploration of Eastern or Southern fashions. These books tend to focus on European and American fashion trends so if you're looking for a progression of Southern African or far East Asian clothing you would not be satisfied with these books. However these books do explore a lot within all the major time periods and countries that were most well known for advancing fashion starting from the Ancient Egyptians to modern day Europe all in a nicely sized book you can easily carry around with you. I would highly recommend not only this book focusing on the unique headwear of the world but the whole set of Wilcox's books for anyone looking to expand their repertoire of clothing designs for illustration, character design, or even historical costume making.
