Readability and academic relevance
This book is an imitation and a continuation of Prof Arthur Llewelyn Basham’s WONDER THAT WAS INDIA that provides a truly wonderful introduction to Ancient Indian history. The second volume is good as far as it goes, and is informative. But it seems more like an afterthought, and is not so entertaining and delightful as the earlier one. It is, however, a competent account of Medieval History, as it is called.

This book was not required
It is an uncontested, incontrovertible fact that civilizationally, India's decline started during the 13th century. Now, Prof. Basham was aware of this and limited his wondrous book about India to before that century. The only necessity of bringing out a "second volume" seems to be political - to equalize a supposed cultural slight experienced by the liberal establishment at the omission of the ominous 13th - 18th centuries.Even begrudging them a book, what was the necessity of calling it a "second volume"? Even worse, what was the necessity of relegating Prof. Basham's book as the "first volume".I will keep looking for the edition of Prof. Basham's book that doesn't call it "Vol. I".
