The Best
This could be Kelton’s best book ever. It depicts the challenges of a lifetime, the pain, the pleasure, and all those emotions in between. I’ve read almost all of Kelton’s books and this one stirred me more than I thought possible. I’m thankful to have Kelton’s talent be a part of my life!

A Generational Western Mystery with a Chilling Twist!
An old stubborn hardheaded man in court with his life on the line and the entire city seems to be against him. What events caused him to be in this situation? Why is he on trial for his life? This spellbinding novel begins with a man on trial for his life. What crime did he commit? How did it happen? Kelton tells the tale of this old man in split fashion, beginning in the present, and then pealing away the years back to the beginning, developing the story that would result in this court trial. Back and forth the book goes, present and then background story, and what an interesting story it is! Kelton spins a masterpiece of writing in putting together arguably his supreme novel. I can't help but think Kelton writes somewhat of himself into the novel's central character, Frank Claymore, for he seems to know the thoughts and feelings of this stubborn pioneer. As the book unfolds, we find out more about what happened in the past to lead to the present, and what crime exactly Claymore is charged with. Just enough is revealed to keep the reader hungering for more. The conclusion has a plot twist that will catch most readers by surprise. Chilling and thought provoking, Kelton truly knows how to tell a story.I loved this book and highly recommend it.kone

A depressing read
Elmer Kelton is a wonderful author and obviously knows his Texas history, but both of these books have unlikable characters and are quite sad. I would highly recommend many of Mr. Kelton's books, but not these. They are very well written, as are all of his books, but these are depressing.

Elmer Kelton
Elmer is one of those writers that is very knowledgeable about Texas having grew up there. His writing speaks to me in so many ways it's like I am there. Highly recommend his books.

A steady buildup to the end.
I really enjoyed this adventure, especially after reading some reviews. The story moved along like a Texas cattle drive, toward a satisfying sale at the railhead.
