Great Resource
Although somewhat dated with UE 5's existence, this is one of the best books for learning Unreal Engine that I've come across (and I've read many). If you have little to no programming experience, this book won't be able to teach you the entire C++ language, but in my opinion, this is a near impossible task for just about any single book. The author does do a good job of covering a majority of the key aspects though, and if you're like me and you've been exposed to C++ at least to a moderate extent, you will be comfortable enough when it's time to start programming in the engine. What I loved most about this book was the fact that the author explained the reasoning behind every step, whether it be related to a line of code or some other aspect of creating a game in Unreal. Far too many of the other similar books I've read tell you what to do, with little insight as to why you're doing it or how it works. That's not the case here, and as a result, it's much easier to apply the material to similar yet different problems you may face in your own projects. If you have some existing comfort with coding, or plan on utilizing other resources to learn C++ along with this book, I can't recommend it enough as a tool for building your Unreal Engine C++ skills.

Good Book!!!!
The Handbook is really nice and gets you to where you want to be in C++ compiling . . . .but I was new to Unreal and C++and needed more background . . . .I'm happy to say that I'm re-reading the material and getting a better understanding of the principles stated within this text . . . .If you are new to Unreal or C++ and want to beef up your knowledge in order to tackle what's presented here . . .I say The Unreal Engine 4 Game Development Quick Start Guide is a great start . . . before reading the Handbook . . . .Also . . .I started out reading C++ for Dummies -- a 6 in 1 book combo . . . .it's ok . . . and you might want to try it out . . . but the Python Crash Course published by No Starch Press was excellent . . .and they have a C++ version called C++ Crash Course . . . .You might want either the Dummies or the Crash Course or both before reading the Handbook . . . .regardless . . .you'll want some background on C++ before tackling the Handbook . . . Now . . .blueprints are important and you may want to start before or after reading the Handbook in a book about Blueprints . . . .Blueprints Visual Scripting for Unreal Engine by Packt publishing looks real good . . . and you will develop a lot in blueprints while reading the Handbook . . .so . . .to get an edge on blueprints you might want to pick up Blueprints by Packt publishing . . . .All in all . . .the Handbook really got into Unreal by page 150 and taught you what you might need while developing your own game . . .it's a great book . . .hope you buy a copy . . . .

Better for unreal 4
I was a ruby on rails software engineer for years and I am transitioning to game development and so I thought this was a good book choice. Now that unreal 5 is out this book is outdated, but still relevant and helpful. I have experience with c++ and it helped me understand some of the more advanced material. But I found that this was a good book for beginners to the language. There are some things I felt could be explained better with better examples so I'm glad I picked up more than one book on the subject. Unreal 5 is much more advanced when it comes to blueprints as I have one more current book that allows for game dev with no c++ code to write as well. However this book gets into those details so you can build a game from scratch using unreal 4. Anyway I read I cover to cover in about a week and found it very helpful. The author knows what he is doing so I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn to make games for unreal 4.

If you want to understand the logic behind the process flow - This is the book u are looking for
Other books just tell u to drag and drop into the event graphs, or just type this lines of codes, but never explains how the logic works. It as if they dun want u to know or just plain lazy. Given the price of this book, and the in depth explanation how the logic works. U find urself self learning is a drag and getting tutored tailored to really helps u understand. This is the book u been waiting ur whole life. ( If u want to develop a game )

Very Great Intro
Not only do they cover the basics of working in Unreal, but they teach good techniques for properly combining the two when it's appropriate. This isn't a very In-Depth book, but it's laid out very well.

Good book
For me this was a good tool to get started at a fundamental level.

Great info, poor execution
WOW okay so where to being, there is a TON of great info in this book. Lots of unique ways to implement ideas and execute certain tasks. It definitely can serve as a great guide for newer programmers, but DO NOT BUY WITHOUT PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE!!!The amount of typos, in this book is absolutely outrageous, if that wasn't bad enough some of the time you are trying to do a project the author omitted a key piece of information or told you to put it in the wrong area, at first it isn't prevalent but my god by the end of the book it's literally everywhere! In a book that's supposed to be about doing something perfect else it doesn't work that's inexcusable. So half the time when you are trying to implement the project and it doesn't work you can't even be sure if it's something you did wrong or the book told you to do wrong. Then you get to navigate to his project files and go line by line each set of code to see what you did wrong. The most egregious examples of this are in Chapter 11. The very last project he has you do I couldn't get to work after hours of problem solving. EVEN RIPPING HIS OWN CODE it didn't work. I redid everything 3 separate times and still couldn't find the issue. I ended up needing to rip his own UE4 blueprints from the content directory to make the thing work so I still don't know if it's something I did wrong or he did wrong.Buy the book if you have a decent amount of UE4 experience, if not your money could better be spent on some online learning classes that walk you through it.
