Foundation and Anchor Design Guide for Metal Building Systems 1st Edition

One of the best design reference textbooks I've ever seen. The author gives the background concepts as most would, but also gives a huge wealth of best-practice advice, very practical calculation guidance and design examples. My only gripe would be that I would like to see it updated for ACI 318-14 (current code at this review time). References to 318-08 are plentiful, and with a cross-reference guide from 318-11 to 14 (free from ACI), you can usually track down the new code sections with a little bit of effort to make sure the rules didn't change after the book was written.Great for students and practicing engineers alike. If you ever have to do a metal building foundation and you aren't already an expert, I think you'll find some useful information in this book.

Found this to be a very well written / easily understandable reference. Some of the calculations took some time to sort through because I hadn't seen the equations for a while, but the issue was my lack of familiarity with the subject matter, not the presentation of the information. The only thing that would have made it easier for me would have been if the sample problems would have been in MathCAD so that you could see the unit conversions as they happened vice backing into them using the text/numbers provided. As you see, I still rate it a 5-star reference and will keep it handy on my bookshelf of reference materials.

There is a lot of information about soil types and conditions. Well presented with practical information and examples.

I took a foundation design course taught by Alexander Newman in 2008. At the time, his Metal Building Systems book was a bit out of date. He had a course workbook that contained newer information, but the material was still in draft and some of it handwritten. I just bought this new edition of his book, and find it to be superb. The examples he had in the 2008 workshop are now well documented and easy to follow.You can also apply his design principles to other types of building structures.

This book provides a good overview but is in no way a replacement for the building code or ACI. In particular, the design examples cite code provisions that are applicable only non-seismically active areas.

Very well written design book by Alexander Newman. I have taken several review courses presented by Mr. Newman, and he is very knowledgeable on the subject. This book is specifically written for Metal Building Systems, but the information can be applied to other building systems.

LOTS of good information, especially on foundation & footings

Great reference book for anyone that is unfamiliar with the design of these structures (like myself). Very straightforward, but complete and detailed.
