Q: Can this be used on firearms? i've used it to oil my s&w handgun a couple times already besides my knives. would it have any adverse affect?

Hi there - yes KPL can be used on firearms and will not have any negative effects. KPL is a fabulous lubricant and wear preventive. Please note that, like any oil, KPL may darken unstabilized woods. Also, KPL is fairly viscous (thick) and therefore not appropriate for use inside the barrel of your firearm.

Q: Is this different from the oil you use on the blade to prevent rust? Or can this be used for that purpose as well?

Mineral oil; very cheap, works great for sharpening use with a ceramic stone, an Arkansas stone or a diamond stone and is food safe and unless you're opening and closing your folding knife @ 7,000 rpm or above and generating a lot of heat you don't need a fancy, smancy, high dollar lubricant in the pivot hinge of a folding knife, mineral oil ill work fine. A thin film of mineral oil left on a high carbon blade is also good rust prevention also.
