My mixed metals mother's necklace is made completely of sterling silver and 14kt gold-filled metal.

It is a far nicer quality than gold plate, as it will not flake off, chip, or turn colors. 14kt gold-filled metal has a layer of 14kt gold over top of a base metal, making it a fraction of the cost of solid gold, but with the same beautiful look.
