Hi RosaThe batteries are not included with the microscope. It needs 2 AA batteries for the light.

What is the age range for this?

An intelligent sensitive inquisitive child of 6 could hold still long enough to experience the wonder of looking at creation from a different perspective. I think if really interested and want to make own slides a sturdier microscope is needed
