How do I poke in the side tabs? I tried the tine of a fork & only 2 pushed down

I used my car key to press the tabs inward.

Does this work on carpenter ants

This should work with all species of Ants. If you order these from ToyArama before 11:00pm eastern time tonight we will ship these to you TOMORROW. We are looking forward to serving you. Ken @ ToyArama

if the punch out openings are near the top can ants easily enter the trap?

The 'punchouts' on the container are clearly indicated and easy to use. I always use the prescribed punchouts. Don't worry, the ants will find their way into the trap. I have used these traps for years - the best value and THEY WORK! I usually put these traps in small plastic sealable tubs that I cut some small openings in (I save these tubs and reuse year after year). They still work and I don't have to be concerned about our pets getting into them. When using the outdoor traps, the tubs help keep rain/moisture as well as animals from getting at the traps.

Are they safe to use in a car?

Can't say with certainty; I've not had reason to use it this way. Clearly one wouldn't want the cannister to be accessible to anyone who is not able to handle it responsibly but, that having been said, I doubt the item could be effective in a car. If I understand its function correctly, the ants take its contents back to their nest and the colony dies from ingesting the material.
