Q: will this work "seamlessly" with the apple smart keyboard, i.e. turn off screen when cover closed? one reviewer says no... anyone else?

Apple's smart keyboard works perfectly with this case, including turning the screen off when closed.

Q: Anyone have difficulties removing the pencil?

I do occasionally find it difficult to remove the pencil. If I have just trimmed my fingernails, it's impossible without some object to pry it with. On the other hand, I'm fully confident the $100 pencil will not slip out on its own. That's a tradeoff I'm happy to accept. Overall, this is an excellent cover.

Q: will a smart cover work with this case

Yes it does, I have keyboard Smart Cover works well with it. Looks as one and pen placement works also easy access

Q: What are the dimensions of the case with an ipad in it and a smart keyboard on it? H x W x D in inches please.

The dimensions for H and W would be the same with or without the iPad in the case and are listed on the product description. The depth with a Smart Keyboard would be a bit deeper vs the regular Smart Cover. ~11mm with the Smart Keyboard and ~9mm (0.6in) with the Smart Cover. However, the Smart Cover adds no depth because it sits inside the case’s lip. Hope that helps. Also as I said, the Smart Keyboard doesn’t hold as well magnetically to the device as the Smart Cover.
