Q: Is this a good cooler for hauling a 4000ib trailer?

YES. The B&M #70268 is rated at 13,000 lbs. TOTAL weight. TIP: ALWAYS mount your B&M Trans Cooler with the HOLES UP, so that the entire cooler is filled with oil when the engine is running. The OUTLET side of the radiator trans cooler fitting gets connected to the INLET side of the B&M cooler. In other words, Radiator FIRST, then B&M cooler. Before towing, BE SURE that ALL your tire pressures are set properly.

Q: It looks like the cooler attaches directly onto the radiator... will those ties cause damage to the radiator over time?

I've had my B&M 70268 Trans Cooler installed for over 11 years, with NO ISSUES of any kind. I used the BRACKET MOUNTS -- to avoid possible radiator damage from the PLASTIC TIES poking through the radiator. B&M "Stacked Plate" Transmission Coolers must be mounted with the HOLES UP for MAXIMUM COOLING.

Its pretty universal. Your vehicle needs to have a preexisting cooler or hookup will require tapping ports into the tranny. Your best point for an answer will be a ford explorer specific forum. Mine was used on my 4runner.

Installation is very easy, even for someone who isn't mechanically inclined.
