Yes, but the detection signal is weaker than from wallboard alone. I used this device to install grip bars on tiled wall.

can this detect studs from behind an stucco wall

The D-TECT 120 has a Universal mode for most walls including brick walls, a special mode for concrete and one for drywall. In the drywall mode the device will find studs in drywalls. The device is not designed to find studs in solid walls.
