Pharoah Sanders 2CD anthology on Universal Records
Beautiful 2CD compilation collecting many of the best works by Pharoah. Very clean recordings, well mixed and balanced. Much better tan what I have experienced on GRP-US. In Japan his recordings are published on Universal. The songs have a great variety of musicians playing all kinds of instruments including piano, harp, violin and vocals. The percussion is magnificent.! All these things are clearly heard with lots of space to spare. The stereo depth is fantastic! Many of his best songs are on disc one. The signal to noise ratio is very good and the frequency response is excellent. Disc two has some good songs too, but there are some attempts to "produce" Pharoah's music to make it more commercial. These songs are a bit disappointing.Pharoah's songs are normally quite lengthy, so all these tunes are edited down here. The edits are very well done and not very noticeable.

A Musical Blessing
As only being aware of a few tracks of Pharoah Sanders soul-touching music, especially one of the few sources that strangely cause tears to flow uncontrollably other than a parent passing away (I cannot put my finger on the trigger as to why, since I tend to look on human tragedy as an observer/recorder)...When Pharoah Sanders "brings home" (ends the track with his solo)the track called "The Gathering" you would think I just observed the end of the world, the tears and the bubbly just deluge out of me, go figure...and Nozipho, soul stirring!Basically, I bought this album for these two tracks "Nozipho" and "The Gathering".I have to add that this album's version of "The Gathering" is edited/shortened...so, if I can ever get past the deluge of tears, then I'll be able to determine wether or not I like that it has been shortened. How was I to know that...the entire album would be a Musical Blessing...I would never use the skip button on this album!

A fine anthology.
I still make cassette compilations (out of habit and ease of editing/fading), and this CD set is better than the Pharoah tape I made for myself. A must have, especially if you don't have many of his records (buy them too!). I go back to "Tauhid" (which you should have), and consider it one of my top-30 all-time records.

A Treasure Trove of Delight
This double gives almost 155 minutes of listening time, and the selections are culled from Sanders albums from 1967-96. There are 18 tracks, 5 which have been 'edited' (shortened), but all the others have their full running time, a number well over 10 minutes, and one of 15 & one of 20 minutes. This is my first introduction to Sanders, who I discovered being name-checked by John Martyn, no less. The music is dynamic & melodic (with the occasional keynote screechy tone from Sanders, not my favourite!); overall though this is refreshing & beautiful work, some meditative, some beguiling ballad structures ('Love will find a way'), and there's simply a treasure trove of ideas to uncover/explore. The excitement of this music has all the freshness of a live recording, and that's a compliment as the musicianship & quality of recording are excellent. I simply have to explore the original albums on the strength of this Anthology...

Outstanding
I'm not a major jazz fan - with little beyond Miles Davis, Coltrane, Pat Metheny, Weather Report, Nubya Garcia, Santana/McLoughlin and Kamasi Washington - but I decided to take a chance on this because of Sanders' links with the Coltranes. And what a purchase! From the first track, Upper Egypt..., the album gripped me: mystical, spacey and with expressive tenor sax bursting in at time, but never overpowering.Quite a few of the tracks are substantial edits, so it will be interesting to listen to the full takes elsewhere. Side 2, as it moves forward in Sanders' career, is smoother but still great listening: no skips. It has encouraged me to delve more into Pharoah Sanders' catalogue, starting with his most recent release.

Gorgeous
I was a little disappointed to see that some the tracks had been edited down, but as a relative newcomer to Sanders' work I have to say that I didn't really notice the edits. Whoever did them did a great job. This is beautiful music. I was expecting something a bit more atonal and "free" . There is a fair bit of honking around, but it just fits in with the music. Amazing musician(s). This is very accessible jazz. Perfect for the hot weather. Lovely to just lie back, close your eyes and listen.
