Do these work on their own? If I plug one into an unused outlet, will it monitor the outlet, or do I need to also plug a lamp (or anything) into it.

We recommend that the smartplug be plugged into any open outlet on the same circuit you want to monitor. We do not recommend that anything be plugged into it, although you can.

Do I have to have location on for this to work on cell. And alsoI set up a guest network that is just 2.4 should that be good?

No; location services does not need to be on. Yes, a guest network using 2.4 Ghz should work fine.

Will these work in regular (non GFI or AFI) sockets?

Yes. I'm using them in a non-GFI socket in a room out in our garage to be able to tell if/when power is lost to a socket that a freezer is plugged into.

Will it let you know if it falls out of the outlet?

Yes it will, you will get a notification if it loses power for any reason, whether it falls out of the wall or you lose power to your house.
