Programming Elixir 1.3: Functional |> Concurrent |> Pragmatic |> Fun

Ive been through a few different Elixir books now and this is the first that really captured my attention and kept me focused the entire time. I'm only about halfway through so far but I've been working through each of the exercises and have been learning a lot more (most due to the hands on nature of the exercises presented throughout each chapter). Definitely recommend if you're looking to get into Elixir and/or Functional Programming (in general).

I was not able to read this linearly, due to the difficulty of the topic and my own limitations, however, I came back to it several months later and read Chapters 6, Modules and Functions, Chapter 7, Lists and Recursion, and Chapter 13, Organizing a Project. This gave me enough context to go back and study the syntax here and there, and plough through Part 2, which is mainly about leveraging the OTP, a framework of abstraction that gives Elixir applications a real edge over more traditional Object Oriented applications. I'm really happy I came back to this book, it is written wonderfully and I highly recommend it.

Excellent book, very approachable, good writing style. Not pedantic and boring like a lot of literature in its class.

Great book! Provided a solid intro to Elixir and it's a reference to go back to to read up when the official documentation doesn't have enough context.

This book is probably the best introduction to Elixir. Dave does a great job of guiding you through new topics and features followed by a set of challenges before moving on. Extremely happy with this book and the approach.

Good, easy to follow book. Take your time with each chapter, understand the concepts and work the examples. The key is to fully understand each chapter before moving on to the next.

Neither this,nor "Elixir in Action"are begin-programming books:they both assume experience in object-oriented programming( like proper Ruby, or Ook! [ that is o-o-k, not a typo: look it up ] ; ).i got both for my hope to become competent in making the web-framework "Phoenix" into my means...( Ruby on Rails is to Ruby,what Phoenix is to Elixir,& Elixir is based on the Erlang v.m.,which happens to be the ONLY intrinsically-lots-threadedbasis for a web-server, that i know-of...iow, if you want a slashdot-*proof* site,you want both Phoenix & the ability ?to partition your site?( seems required, by me )& the ability to feed your server as many cores+GBs as it needs...no worker-thread-bottleneck in this rig,as there would be in any of the established ones, see...: )i consider Elixir to be *THE* sane *strategic* basis for operations,though of course Establishment has some alternative opinion...This book i find to be my dig-in-first book,( been reading about programming since 1980s,done a teeny bit,but am autistic & think in something similar to C,so am not a normal customer, on either side of the OO/programming line )and i will be switching between the 2 books as this stuff tries getting into me brain...there is a book on Phoenix,which i will invest in in a few months,after eating these books!there is another book that may helpbeginners in the whole programming-thing, better into Elixir...hth!( :

I love this book! The author has made it fun to learn. Reading through, I am a little more than 2/3 through the book, and intrigued to keep reading. I will definitely be finishing this book! Right now I am doubling back and re-reading from the beginning to make my own notes and work through the exercises. This book is a pleasure, and has captured my attention.Note: this book is targeted for people with some programming experience. If you have never programmed before, this is probably not the best starting point.Kudos to Jose Valim for coming up with Elixir, and Dave Thomas for helping the masses to consume it.

This book is awesome, if you are diving into Elixir.I have no background in functional programming, and it seems like the Elixir is the best way to learn basic FP concepts. This is certainly because one of the main goals of the language is to ensure ease of use (first class documentation, Ruby like syntax, etc). It's created by one of the contributors of Rails after all :-) !The book has interesting exercises after each chapter. The main difficulty I was facing (coming from an imperative world) was to think in terms of FP. The book specifically attacks this problem by highlighting how you would go about some problem in an imperative worlds and in FP world. This comparison is helping me to notice the different subtleties for FP and learn in the concepts in general.I recommend this to everyone !

Dave Thomas faz como sempre um excelente trabalho. O livro tem uma fluência muito boa e o conteúdo abordado é ótimo. O livro discute a linguagem e o paradigma funcional, além de capítulos inteiros dedicados a diferentes conceitos do OTP, framework para processamento distribuído de alta disponibilidade do Erlang. Vários exemplos e dicas para uso do Elixir em casos reais também são apresentados.Vale notar que já existe uma edição mais atualizada do livro, que cobre a versão >1.6 da linguagem.

Un libro que esperaba adquirir desde hace tiempo. Excelente contenido y facil comprensión, recomendado para cualquier nivel, desde principiante hasta experto.
