Grammar for Gemara & Targum Onkelos: An Introduction to Aramaic

Having studied biblical, targumic, and talmudic Aramaic, I can tell you that the grammar of talmudic Aramaic is by far the most complicated. This book does a wonderful job of covering the varying verb forms one might encounter in the Talmud. It treats regular verb forms and variants while allowing one to find the paradigms appropriate to a long list of other verbs one might encounter. My only qualm with this book, and it is very minor, is that some of the vowel pronunciations occasionally vary slightly from the way these words are often popularly pronounced in religious circles. Thus, these verb forms may not completely match up with the vocalizations found in popular editions the Bavli. But the differences are slight and probably vary by regional differences anyway. That set aside, this is an indispensable tool for really understanding a very complicated grammar.

This book offers paradigms of nouns and verbs in Targumic and Talmudic Aramaic. It amounts to the kinds of verb and noun tables one finds as an appendix to a comprehensive dictionary of a modern language. It is a useful reference for one who already has a basic knowledge of the grammar of the group of dialects which comprise Targumic and Talmudic Aramaic. The reader should not expect it to serve as a textbook to teach the grammar.

Product arrived on time and as described. I still have the first edition. The additions in this most recent edition are great. This is a very helpful ‘classic’ which should be open on the table by anyone serious about learning.

Very useful book for gemarah study only thing I would say is that it can be a bit advanced if you dont have a good grasp of general grammar and hebrew grammar .But overall still very good.
