Put one in when you load the eggs in the pot, So yes when cold water is in pot and you put on burner to start the boil of eggs. Hopes this helps.

U throw it in with the eggs and let it boil with them. It turns color in the boiling water. It works! I love mine.

Yes, it is accurate. But you must take it off the stove and pour water out and soak eggs in cold water to stop the cooking right away.
