The width of my chair base is 17 5/8 outside groove to outside groove. Will the 18 material work? Thank you

I would try it. As you can see, the woven part is just over 18” and there is the stringy part past that. The stringy stuff would go into the groove. Good luck.

is this product designed to adhere to wood or to old wicker material using glue?

I tried…. Well it was difficult to get it to stick but it did finally get it with a lot of glue and patience. Mine was my wooden cabinet door.

What size are the holes?

3/8"+/- but the hole size is of no import in normal or intended applocation. More important is the size/style of the cane material it self as there are different "weaves" or spacing of the patterns the relative thickness of the assembled webbing in relation to the grooves and locking cane

Can this material be stained?

I’m not sure. I used it on a toy kitchen for my grandkids and left it as is. You might search to see if caning can be stained. :)

Worked well

I have never used a product like this do it was my first time. I watched one videos to make sure I had a clue what I was doing. I replaced a seat back on one of our old dining chairs. You do have to soak it in some water first to loosen it up, but it was a good match for my 35 year old chair.
