Why do i need a speed sensor with a gps equipped polar head unit ? surely the head unit can calculate my speed using gps ?

Yes. Any GPS enabled Polar wrist unit will measure speed and distance for both running and cycling

Can you use this with a turbo trainer along side polar beat/flow as i dont think its compatible with m600?

Yes, I have the speed and cadence on the rear wheel and use with my Taxc turbo. Pairing it with Polar Beat will also work

can these be paired to a m450 at the same time as a H7 HR monitor

Hi. I have paired them to polar v800 together with H7. All three devices (Cadence, speed and heart sensors working together with watches). They should work the same way with m450.

Can this be fitted to oversize carbon spokes?

it probably could... it's just the magnet that attaches to the spokes so you could probably tape or cable tie it on... the only issue is that I've yet to find an app that it works with on my Nexus 5. Any that supposedly support these sensors specify that they require ANT+ hardware.
