If you hang targets on the stand, what happens to the "target backer" when you shoot a lot thru it? Seems it would get pretty shot up needing replace

The backing does get shot up but it takes a several hundred rounds. You can offset the paper target to gain a little extra life. The backing is just corrugated plastic that you can get at almost any hardware store (for sale signs are made of the same material). If you miss the backing and hit the frame it can do damage...I would not use a shotgun. I have 5 of the target stands that I set up at 50 yard increments. They are very portable and easily placed.

The plastic cardboard fits between the metal forks and it fits tight. Bullets pass right through the plastic so there is not much force. I have shot a 338 Lapua and never knocked out the target. However I did hit the metal cross bar when shooting at 400yd with a 270Win...pretty much destroyed the metal arm...that is why I have four of them...set them up at various yardages and work my way out to 400+ yards.

Can this stand be used as an archery target ?

I don't think it would work well as an archery target holder unless you don't mind your arrows going completely thru the target everytime. It wouldn't be able to hold a target beefy enough to stop arrows.

One of the pictures shows a configuration where you can place a 2x4 on the stand to place bottles on. Does that configuration require 2 of these?

The only way it will support a 2x4, 2x6, or 2x8 for that matter is if you were to drill holes in the board accordingly to match up to the posts. Drill the holes and slide the posts straight through.

Don't forget to order some replacement backing !!!

This is really good. Folds up into a compact and easy to carry stand. Nice and stable in light winds as well. Obviously given the cross section don't try it in a medium to strong wind or 90 degrees to the wind. The stand is easy to set up and sticky or clip-on/pin-on targets are easy to mount. The plastic backing is good and durable. I'm using .22 and .17 Rem and HMR and they all punch nice neat little holes through the backing. The backing is like a honeycomb and so retains it's structure and stiffness for a long time. I think I shot over 100 rnds of .22 through this and it's still upright and supporting targets. So pretty good value. Obviously you can substitute the backing but there are replacements for this, so it's worth buying a spare set. I'm glad I've found this as I've been looking for a portable set for a long time.
