Q: Can it hold 50 lbs of weight?

Mine traveled cross country with 49.2 lbs and suffered no damage. Everything stayed safe, also.

Q: Is this bag too big to be checked with American Airlines, when the pockets are used? The dimensions can only add up to 62 inches.

It should be able to be checked bag. I checked it with Delta from Tulsa to Germany. It is definitely too big for carry on luggage.
