Do you have to have alexa installed in order to use these echo buds?

You need an android, ios, or fireOS device running the alexa app to set up the buds. After the setup, any device with bluetooth can connect to the buds.

I listen to audio books so I do not want high Bass. Can the equalizer be set for normal voice speech? Or are these music oriented?

You can adjust the equalizer settings in the Alexa app for the Echo Buds. They can have bass boosted or you can lower the bass as low as you want it to go. They have very good sound quality for voice or anything really at their price point. I've enjoyed them very much.

I can't seem to find any way to adjust the audio balance. I'm half deaf in my left ear and I need to turn volume up in the left and not both. :(

on android you can find it in Settings > Accessibility > Audio > audio adjustment.

The charging case wireless? For chargibg of case?

No. The charging case does not support wireless charging.
