The Rise of Islamic Calligraphy
Q**R
An outstanding book on calligraphy
This book offers new insights into the early years of Islam (very few documents have survived from that period, but Qur'an manuscripts are among them), as well as the vibrant cultural background that give rise to Islamic calligraphy and their conception of beauty, which was inherited from the Greeks. It is an enjoyable read - definitely recommended.Contents:Chapter 1: Looking for the originsChapter 2: The birth of KuficChapter 3: On calligraphy and proportionChapter 4: Towards the codification of cursiveThe appendix has illustrated guidelines to Deroche's script classification.
