I love to draw and I've been doing so since I was 5 years old. I draw in all types of medium from paint to pastel to of course colored pencil and pencil/charcoal. Pencil being my favorite! Breaking down how to create textures has improved my work in so many ways! Giving me better tools as to what grade of pencils to use to create various textures. Lights N darks....etc. You will not be disappointed at all!! I refer to this book constantly. This book helped me to bring the subject matter to life with simple techniques. This was a simple drawing I did of a lion. I did a similar piece a few years back and the 2 are very different. This lion I currently created (the 1 that takes up the word page) it looks like he's staring at you or that he's so real you could almost feel the texture of his fur and mane. This helps to give your subject matter depth and life. If you are already a fairly advanced artist and are looking to fine tune your own skills... Get. This. Book! Review: Glad I bought this... - Awesome book if you want to teach yourself or just review some basics, in case it's been a while (my situation). Having a spiral edition is useful as I can lay it flat or flip it over to the one page I need. The illustrations are excellent and instructions easy to comprehend.

Great reference for beginners
It's a great tool for beginners! However, it's repetitive - using the same subjects for both graphite and charcoal. If someone is not sure what pencil medium to use, it definitely show the differences between them. To be honest this is why the price (in my opinion) was a bit too high. Overall though, techniques are explained well in a step by step format and it's definitely worth referencing.

Fascinating book to build graphite and charcoal skills
The almost ten year old artist in our family LOVES this. He is talented in art well beyond his years so needs adult art books, but with demonstrations of "how to" rather than a lot of text (since he only reads at his 4th grade level.) I reviewed it before giving it to him and found it to be excellent for adults as well.

101 Textures In Graphite & Charcoal is a great learning book
It's a wonderful book to use their step-by-step examples. This is a "how to" book and will guide you so you can follow each step. Since I cannot draw, it still does no preclude me from tracing the diagram and applying the techniques. Great for beginner's! You will learn much. Highly recommend.

I love this book! The textures are beautiful. I love that the author tells you which pencils to use at each step in the drawing. This is a great book for beginners. It shows a lot of details in a step-by-step way that is very easy to follow and understand. I would recommend this book. Fantastic instructions.

A Fast Food version of drawing techniques
The pictures are too small, each about half the size of a business card. There are 4 pictures per "texture" being shown in step by step fashion. One or two sentences to tell you to use an HB, 2B pencil, blend w/a stump or use circular strokes, etc. Very minimalistic.
