Q: Do I have to set it up with a pole?

You either need a pole so something above you to tie it too like a tree branch.

Q: Is there a hole in the middle of the tent for the pole to stick into the ground? Wouldn't this let in bug an such!

Yes there is a hole in the bottom but a walking fits into snuggly. I always put a cheap foil groundsheet under the base of the tent , actually a cheap thermal first aid body wrap they cost next to nothing and fold down to approx 3 inches square stops any cold or damp from the ground

Q: Will a 3 by 3 tarp go over this to make a fully enloseed tarp tent . Would the same or near enough be possible with the xl version ?
