About the item

  • About this cultivar: Hydrangea paniculata VANILLE FRAISE ’Renhy’ is welcome introduction from Pépinières Renault, France. The names translates as Vanilla Strawberry in English. Loose pyramid-shaped clusters of flowers form at the tips of red-stemmed branches in summer. They emerge creamy-white and turn shades of pink as they age, before finally taking on rich red and russet tones. Perfect for adding late summer colour to the shrub border, or for creating an informal, flowering hedge..
  • About this genus: Hydrangea (hy-dran-je-a) get its name from the Greek hydor, water, and aggeion, a vessel, or vase, in reference to the shape of the seed . It is a classic garden . The genus Hydrangea contains about 75 species of shrubs, trees and woody vines, along with hundreds of named cultivars. Hydrangeas are grown primarily for their large flower clusters that vary in shape from flat lacecaps, to long panicles, and large, round mopheads..
  • Common species are paniculata (pointed panciles of flowers) and arborescen (mopheads of flowers). You may read lots of different things about pruning paniculata cultivars. We find the best thing to do is shear them back hard to about three feet from ground level in March (spring) each year. For the mop-headed Hydrangea arborescen cultivars we cut them back further to ground level each March. Strange, as the name (arborescen means 'tree like') would imply you leave them alone..
  • Hydrangeas grow best in sun or partial shade and are not too fussy regarding soil (as long as it isn't extreme). We typically grow them in mixed borders, and in our garden at Ballyrobert we have them almost everywhere!.
  • Position: Full sun, partial shade Soil: Almost any soil, grows well in Ballyrobert Flowers: June, July, August Other features: Grows well in Ballyrobert Hardiness: Fully hardy - grows well in Ballyrobert! Habit: Clump forming, bushy Foliage: Deciduous Height: 120 - 180 cm (4 - 6 ft) Spread: 120 - 180 cm (4 - 6 ft) Time to full growth: 5 to 10 years type: aceous Perennial, shrub Colour: Green, white, pink.
s are sold in half litre sized pots (9cm pots that are nearly pint sized, about 520ml in capacity). All the cultivars we sell have been grown and tested in our own garden (which is an RHS partner garden open to the public). When your s arrive they can usually be ed straight out after soaking in water for 3 or 4 minutes. A good rule of thumb; make the soil level of the pot level with the rest of your border when ing out. Another rule of thumb; nearly all our s will grow in indirect sunlight; we are in the British Isles after all. Another rule of thumb (!); s usually do better in the ground, which is unsurprising because that where they can from! Containers are ok if s are kept fed and watered during their growing months, and in a warmer place during the winter. Try not to over water! During the year s can be in various states of growth. The same delivered in early spring could be much bigger or smaller if delivered in late spring. Please be aware of this when ordering or receiving them. Some s may have their flowers and foliage cut back when we send them, and look a bit awful! Don't worry, it is for their own good; some s like to travel light. Similarly bulbs, rhizomes, and some s may be dormant or dying back for the year when you order them, they may even look dead - that is the nature of hardy perennials so don't worry. them out and wait, perhaps until next year, patience is a virtue in the hardy perennial game. Eventually your hardy perennials should grow back beautiful year after year. Again, this is the nature of hardy perennials - they die back and grow back, die back and grow back, year after year after year. Some years are better than others. You get the picture! Postage and packaging is a flat fee of £3.99 per order If you are for some reason upset in any way please contact us - we're human.
