Does the mesh feel scratchy on your neck or is it a soft mesh?

I have not noticed a scratchy feel. The gray color of these seems easier to see through than “black” face nets I have tried previously.

Could the bottom opening be closed off entirely (as in closing like you would close a bag)? Wondering if would work to cover tomato plants??

It has a drawstring at the bottom, so it can close almost entirely if it’s cinched tight enough. It’s made to cover your head, so I’m not sure it would be long enough to fully enclose a tomato plant. Perhaps small ones?

Will the item protect against midges? (They are smaller than mosquitoes).

Yes. They protect against NH black flies - about the same size as Scottish midges.

Should it be washed before wearing? How is it washed? In washer with cold termperature?

It's nylon plastic, so washing it won't do much (unless you get it dirty after wearing it). We didn't bother washing ours before wearing them the first time. If you want to wash, I recommend cold water, in washer or sink, then air dry.
