Very helpful addition
Having lead in colors other than plain, standard graphite is a game changer. Red lead shows up much better on white oak than graphite.

Good, but don't store them in a hot vehicle
I used to keep these in my tool bag in the trunk of my car, only to discover that these Pica dry pencil refills will literally evaporate at high temperatures -- they simply vanish. Now I store them inside during the Summer. They're great for making temporary marks on steel, plastic pipe, wood, concrete, etc.

Great for making layout lines on dark wood
I use these refills to make layout lines on dark wood such as walnut and even cherry. The lines are distinct and they can be easily removed with either a damp paper shop towel or a bit of mineral spirits on a paper towel. The sharpening device in the PICA pen is terrific and works well with these refills.

Work good for writing on various surfaces.
Once you get a Pica pencil you will not go back to regular carpenters pencils. These refills are expensive, but write good on various surfaces like metal and plastic. The lead is very soft so you cannot apply much pressure without them snapping off. Due to the wax material they’re made of. They do not last well either.
