Q: will these hinges work on a bench lid 18"x66" with no place between wall and lid?

These brass hinges are not strong enough to handle a lid that size. They look ok, but they’re weak!! I would recommend using the grey spring assisted (2) hinges instead.

Q: Do these hinges provide "soft shut"?

Not really. They're designed for safety and will "soften" the close but by no means will they pull a lid all the way to close without a push.

Q: Do you need a piano hinge or some other hinge to go with these or will it work all by themselves?

They work very well just like shown, just take care to position them per instructions
