Can I use this indoors to track my daughter riding her horse? Or outdoor while my son races dirt bikes?

Hi, yes. Suggest you to purchase a gopro plate to use with it. The plate for Smooth 4 may be released later.

I've noticed many bad reviews about android app. i would like to know if this app is necessary to record the movies, edit them or both?

The only way to use any of the controls on the gimbal are by using the app. The Android app with my Samsung S8 is garbage. Will only let you record in 720P. Sure you can still record using the camera app on the your phone, but none of the gimbal controls will work. Fortunately for me I didn't buy this, just borrowed from my brother.

Can you shoot 4k with samsung phones with the android zy play app?

Galaxy Notte 9 the app indicates its recording 720p but files are recording in 4k when selected in the settings. I have checked the file info in post.
