Do I need to but the vex iq separate for it to work?

No you do not need to buy Vex IQ for it to shoot. However, it is compatible for Vex IQ. What's included is: 275 pieces that will shoot rubber tipped darts up to 6 meters. You will need 6 AA batteries that are not included.

SO MUCH FUN!!!

My 10 year old put this together. Granted, she's really good at this sort of stuff, but she did it without help. It fires really fast and really far and is a great toy. So many other things you can do with it too. It is sturdy too. Awesome gift for the tinkering kid!
