4 and 1/2 Stars! Well Told Viking Tale from 10th Century Ireland
This is a part of Coulter's Viking series and follows SEASON OF THE SUN though it is not related to it. Really, it seems this is the first in the "Viking lord" trilogy (see list below). Set in Ireland and an island off the coast of England in 910, this is the story of Mirana, a Viking woman who is abducted one night by her brother's enemy, Rorik, Lord of Hawkfell. Rorik seeks vengeance for the death of his wife and children at the hand of Mirana's brother, Einar. Once on Hawkfell Island, Mirana makes friends among the women and comes to see the island as home, but all is not well, and Einar still has plans for her.Coulter has taken care to get the period right, including details of dress, food and dwellings. She has also created some wonderful characters, including a huge dog named Kerzog. The writing is well done and the plot has many satisfying twists and turns. While Rorik's actions toward Mirana were brutal at times (and the low ratings are just a reaction to that in my opinion), you have to remember this is a Viking romance, set in the times when women were chattel and many were taken in raids to be slaves. Then, too, Mirana, who Rorik is coming to care for, is the sister of his enemy who slayed his family. That these two could find love is definitely a story of second chances and love triumphing over many obstacles. Mirana's brother, Einar is a real deviant who likes inflicting pain and cares for no one. There is humor, action and a complex love story here. A worthy Viking tale.Viking SeriesSEASON OF THE SUNLORD OF HAWKFELL ISLANDLORD OF RAVEN'S PEAKLORD OF FALCON RIDGE

C. C. Is one of the greatest storytellers ever.
I have read so many of her books, she gives me so much in her stories. I see everything the birds, the rocks, the boats, all of the environment. Some books I've read I don't know the color of the characters eyes or hair until the middle of the book and even then it's is described in passing. The story line is excellent, never stagnant. Not once did I put the book down bc I wanted to, only bc I had to eat, clean or something else.I'm surprised I found a book by this author I hadn't read but actually I found a few and bought most of them.

Brutal but good!
Makes you hurt and love with the characters! Makes you wish you lived then and very glad you don’t at the same time!

I like this author
I like this author, but I found the 'love' scenes at times to be stilted at best. Overall, good story line that pulled me in.

Rolicking period romance
The plot is not a huge surprise but there are enough twists to make for an entertaining read. Coulter makes her characters come alive through wonderful dialogue along with creating a realistic sense of the Viking life at that time. Lots of fun!

Action packed!
Kept my interest , read the entire book , much action & adventure & decent Romance I like that the heroine in coulter books are always virgin until Meeting the hero & are not exessively abused! Too much maltreatment is not enjoyable to read!

Lord of Hawkfell Island
Good easy read although I wouldn't say it was one of her best.M/s Coulter has a genius for describing characters so that you can imagine them and empathise with them. She sets the scenes in the story using detail when necessary but can also use very few words and still get the required atmosphere across to the reader.

Terrible
I normally enjoy Coulters books but this one glorified rape and violence towards women too much. Sure I understand in those days women were chattel but sister you ain't writing no historical saga it's not even historical fiction, it's fiction pure and simple and it's bad fiction. Skip this one guys.
