6 to 8 if can is not crushed .. but im assuming youll crush the cans lol

No need to buy when you can use a plastic bag from any store checkout for free!

Q: Will a grocery bag fit in this as a garbage bag?

No. This purchase was a bust. A weighted garbage bag is much more usable. I have already given mine to Goodwill.

Q: Will it sit on a smooth,non-carpeted surface and not slip around?

It was in back with the kids, but they said it worked great and stayed in place with no problems - the back has 'car carpet', though, so not sure about the slipping. I"m sure you could attach some adhesive type grips, if necessary.
