Fannie Flagg's Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook: Featuring: Fried Green Tomatoes, Southern Barbecue, Banana Split Cake, and Manyother Great Recipes

Having only just received the book, I haven't had time to try out any of the recipes but I can't wait to do so. After a trip to the Southern States I wanted a cookbook that would enable me to recreate many of the dishes that I tried on my travels. Being a fan of the book 'Fried green Tomatoes..' made me select this one and I am so glad that I did. I am already hooked on it and intend to try out loads of the recipes that are on my rather long 'shortlist'. Fannie Flagg's anecdotes really add to the book too, so I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who would like to try some traditional recipes and have a lighthearted read. Enjoy!(The only thing that might possibly put some people off is the lack of photos to accompany the recipes. This was certainly no problem for me and I enjoyed looking at the few historical ones that had been added).Having tried a couple of the recipes since writing the above review, I am now even more impressed with the book and have many family members who are great fans of the hummingbird cake!

The book contains some very interesting recipes that are truly fun to read. It's specially fun from a European cuisine perspective. I am not a cook, I bought this book simply to read as I love Fannie Flagg's work from the time I read Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Cafe. I can certainly say that you wont be disappointed whether you are a cook or simply a reader. Also, This is a difficult book to get hold of. So, if you are lucky to have this book, I strongly suggest you don't lend it to any one!

This book is a novelty rather than an actual cookbook. Being a long-time fan of Fannie Flagg, and with the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe being one of my all time favourites, I bought this out of dedication than need.Rather than being a simple reciple book, Flagg has scattered it with quotations from the original book, and written it in the same gossipy tone. It's quite a read, and is almost like opening a menu from the Whistle Stop Cafe.Some of the recipes sound delicious - Barbecue Chicken, Lemon Ice Box Pie, Red Velvet Cake... so it wasn't long before I decided to get busy in the kitchen.I decided to make the Barbecue sauce, and beaten biscuits. Having spent a lot of time in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, I often crave after those wonderfully fluffy, warm savoury scone-type-breads known as biscuits that are served everywhere in the states. However, I was a bit disappointed. After following the recipe to the letter, the biscuits turned out somewhere between a cobbler and a pastry.The barbecue sauce recipe called for a thickly sliced lemon to be boiled up with the rest of the sauce, and removed at the end of cooking. This was unnecessary. The ingredients also asked for cider vinegar, so the result was an extremely sharp and very watery sauce which didn't taste anything like or look like barbecue. However, adding a big spoonful of molasses brought it back to the flavour, and using a little cornflour thickened it to the desired consistency.So, I maintain that this is a novelty book and not an actual cookbook to be taken seriously!

Fabulous book, unusual, funny and the recipes are great.AMAZING service from Atlanta books, such a cheap price and book was only missing dustAtlanta books and Fannie have pulled out all the stops o this book.Entertaining read with great recipes, quirky, delightful.Will use this bookseller again as price was very cheap for book in pristine condition apart from missing dust cover.Wish we could whizz off to Atlanta so cheaply and quickly. Week done Atlanta books.

Great recipes as well as a narrative.

Nice home cooked food with a real Southern Flair. While cooking and eating, think of Whistle Stop and the characters you met in the book. If you've never tried Fried Green Tomatoes, this is the book for you, along with so many other recipes from the "Cafe" and stories from Whistle Stop to go along with them. Enjoy!

Das ist ein tolles Buch mit vielen leckeren Rezepten.Ich mag es sehr.Allerdings sollte man etwas englisch können und bei einigen Rezeptennicht heutige Maßstäbe ansetzen.Southern cooking eben....
