Heavy duty bird bath/drinking (critters) heater
Looking at all those 50w birdbath heaters and reading about them not doing such a great job a keeping the water thawed and also about reliability and the short cord lengths, etc. I looked for an alternative. While I was at a local nursey I asked about a birdbath heater, the guy brings out this heavy duty (made in USA) heater. I'm just ready to buy it when I see the power consumption is 250watts!! I'm seeing $$$$ as I think of the electric bill. Anyway I start looking for a less powerful heater and I ran across the Songbird Essentials SE994 Bird Bath & Multi-Use De-Icer @ 150watts + a 6' cord, which is the same exact heater and manufactured by the same company only less powerful that I saw at the nursery. I figured I could live with that. On a recent 20° morning I put my hand in the water and it was actually luke warm. The container I have is about 24" in diameter and about 2.5"deep and is on the ground. The birds love it as do the neighborhood cats, the squirrels, the local raccoon, possum and stinky the skunk. While it might be a little overkill for my needs the fact it seems to be heavy duty and is made in the 𝐔𝐒𝐀 (when's the last time you bought something on Amazon that was made in America) was enough for me to buy it.

4.5 Stars: Unpack, plug in, solve birdbath freezing problem instantly
This has worked perfectly for me from the start, keeping a deep pan of water, about 4 gallon capacity, from ever coming close to freezing in temperatures as low as 11ºF. Wish the cord were longer than 5 feet, though, because the instructions advise not using any extension cord, thus fairly limited placement options. Have an outdoor-approved GFCI receptacle close to where you want to place the de-icer.

Works fantastic. All of the wildlife love to stop by for some water.
Stayed perfectly fine during the last -20 degrees the past week. Love the product. Easy to get set up and ready to go.

Love It! Highly, Highly Recommend This Birdbath Heater!
This product is by far the best bird bath heater I have ever owned. I tried the flat ceramic type and after a year each, they gave out in the cold Colorado winters. They also collected green scum on them due to bird pooh in the water, even though I cleaned my birdbath every three days. Also the cords were too short, so hard to keep in the bird bath, especially when Crows would peck at the cords, often time would fall out unless weighted down.I have not had that problem with this as the cord is long enough to trail down away from the bird bath and keeps water away from the extension cord I have it plugged into.So far after going out and cleaning every three days, there has been no green scum on this bird bath heater. It is also heavy enough with a long cord, that it keeps itself weighted in the birdbath.I love it and I Highly Recommend It over ALL other bird bath heaters.

This really works!
I want to rave about this! First: the cord is long enough so that I don’t need an extension cord; second: it keeps the water in my granite bird bath free from any and all ice no matter what the temperature here in New England. Even at the height of snowstorms nothing freezes on the bath! Single digit temps are nothing to this heater! Third: it’s heavy enough to sit securely in the bath, no need for a rock to hold it in place.Seriously, if you are considering buying a bird bath heater, don’t hesitate, buy this one now!

Really does the job.
This winter in Michigan has been fairly mild so far, but there have been enough cold spells to prove that this heater can keep a 24" dia bird bath largely free of ice down to 15 degrees. Like other reviewers, I appreciate the long cord and the design and heft of the product that keep it flat and in place. My only concern is whether the unit is turning off when the temperature is above freezing. Just haven't got around to testing it yet. I need to put a Kill-A-Watt in the circuit to see what the draw is. If it pulls 150 watts 24/7, that's going to get expensive, and I'll have to get a thermostatic outlet.

This actually works!
I live in Michigan, and I tried this after the first one I bought only kept a tiny little hole about the size of a coffee cup melted. My entire bird bath has stayed unfrozen so far (although we haven't had a polar vortex this year!). I do get algae, but I don't mind cleaning it every so often rather than not have water available to birds. This is my first winter with it, and I'm hoping it will last many more.

Over heats the water
Element gets the water so hot (even in temperatures in the teens) that it dreams and evaporates. This product is supposed to have an internal thermostat that regulates when it turns on and off. Guessing that’s not true. Saw other reviews about this problem but still hoped for the best. Well I figured wrong. Find a different brand because you’ll be very disappointed with this one.

Water for the winter wild birds.
I bought 2 de-icers to set up 2 areas for providing water for the wild birds this winter. I live in Ottawa, ON so the temps would drop as low as -30*C but I always had water for the birds. It was my first time doing this and I am extremely pleased with these. I used a baby bathtub, some field stones and a raft (also purchased on Amazon) and I had a variety of birds coming. I’d wash and refill the tub every 3 days. These photos show the mourning doves. I will do this each winter from now on. I would recommend these de-icers for sure!
