Q: how do i know if it’s working ?

If your fish tank water is clear,and not cloudy in any way it means the filter is working fine.

Q: How often do you find you need to change these? And do you leave the old one in the tank for a few days?

We change ours every 4-6 weeks, we have 5 cherry barb and a clown plec. We don’t leave the old one in the tank but we only do a 75% water change to ensure there is bacteria for the new filter.

Q: do you still need something to oxygenate the tank or does the filter do that? (i don’t want any real plants)

You could get a air pump and air stone which will create bubbles in the tank,and supply good oxygen.
