Q: Do you have to buy a specific brand of rechargeable batteries?

The battery pack came with it. I believe you can also purchase extras, in case you have the track pad, and want to use it to recharge that, also. That said, be sure that iic you DO buy one of these, that it, indeed, comes with the battery pack. (I have seen them sold separately on eBay) It is useless without it!

Q: Does it come with the battery?

Yes, the battery screws into the end where your battery usually goes, you take the battery cap off and need to store it somewhere so you dont lose it because this replaces that portion of the keyboard.

Q: Can i operate the trackpad while charging? can i use the charger to basically turn the trackpad to a 'wired' trackpad, connected to my imac?

Normal use is to have the trackpad (or keyboard) in the charger at all times, so you never have to consciously charge the battery -- it just stays charged all the time. It's not a "wired" trackpad, in that you can't "unplug it" to turn it off, but essentially it's "insert and never worry about batteries".
