Good Enough to Eat: A Kid's Guide to Food and Nutrition

A great resource for understanding nutrition for the whole family.
In an effort to reinforce our family lessons in nutrition, I bought a half dozen books for little kids through teens to read and discuss. This is by far the best of all I found. The nutrition facts are well explained. The science included is sound and accurate. The advice is pitch-perfect. The book is so attractive that our kids of all ages wrangled for position to see it the first time we read it out loud. The adults in my family felt that they learned good things along with the kids. I can't recommend it highly enough.

All ages can enjoy this
Have a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old and neither of them can literally read, however they absolutely love to go through this book over and over. There are lots of foods they can identify and the art style is wonderful. I get to teach them about health and nutrition and as they get older they can read about it.

Excellent starting point
Good Enough to Eat is an excellent starting point for educating young children (ages 4-7) about nutrition. It has happy and inviting illustrations and introduces basic concepts such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. The book feels a bit dated but is still very useful for starting the conversation. I would not recommend this book for educating an older child about nutrition science but I would recommend it to parents who want help in persuading a young child of the importance of healthy eating.

Has good info
I purchased this book to try and teach my daughter why it's important to eat more healthy foods and drink more water. The book offers great information to inform kids about how food works in our bodies and why variety is important. I think I was expecting it to appeal to a younger audience, but my 5-year-old had trouble understanding some parts. The book arrived bent because it was mailed in a bubble envelope. Otherwise, it was worth the price and I will continue to use it as a teaching tool about a healthy diet.

Good for the whole family
Love Lizzy Rockwell! The Busy Body Book has been one of my kids favorites for some time, and this one is quickly winning a second spot. The pictures keep the younger kids (2-3) attention, and the older ones are learning about the digestive system and nutrients in our food. Recipes at the back are so fun!

A book that has many positives is unfortunately now outdated.
The title page does not include the date of publication - which is 2009. Despite the many good things about this book, it unfortunately is outdated. The fact that it focuses on the Food Pyramid (because written before 2009) should be a tip off that it is outdated. One misstatement in the book is "every food contains at least one nutrient." However, in truth sugar is virtually devoid of any key vitamins and minerals. It is empty calories. Yes, there might be some traces of minerals in some sugars, but traces aren't enough. The book appears to encourage consuming sugar. That's a big concern based on what we know about hidden sugars in foods. Also, it touts yogurts without distinguishing between plain yogurts and sugary flavored yogurts. My hope is the author will update this book STAT.

Lots of good info. Good read aloud!
Good book for my third graders during out health learning. Goes into detail with great facts and thoughts for older readers. My students loved it and I thought it added details to my teaching. Would recommend this because it is not just a simple nutrition book. Lots of info.
