You could also get a filter made for a telescope and just hold it over the front of your camera lens to protect it when photographing the sun. When the sun is totally eclipsed you don't need -- or want -- a filter. But once the total phase of the eclipse begins to end and the sunlight starts breaking out, you'll need to quickly put the solar filter back on for protection.
